Escape to a simpler life with Sammy and Henry

You will be staying on the farm with wonderful hosts, Sammy and Henry, an ideal spot for a family holiday in Fordingbridge, the New Forest, southern England. Their woodland has been a part of the Sykes family since 1790. The farm is home to the Chiddock Pony Stud Farm but you will meet other animals like sheep, goats, pigs, ducks, chickens, sheep and cows. Relax in our spacious tents and log cabins spread out beneath the forest canopy – after all, in 2021 the Irish News described Midgham as the ideal spot for a digital detox.

Explore your New Forest surroundings

All the charms of the New Forest are on your doorstep when you stay at Midgham. It’s a place of idyllic glades, ancient woodland and open moors where ponies, cattle, donkeys and deer roam free. Should you tire of nature then just 10 minutes away is the New Forest Water Park and Somerley House where you'll find all manner of fairs, activities and festivals, something for all ages.

Feeling adventurous? Visit the Go Ape tree-top trail (9 miles away) and Moors Valley Country Park (5 miles). To complete your adventure, visit the mediaeval city of Salisbury and Stonehenge to get a glimpse of our Neolithic past.

What to do at Midgham Farm

An abundance of activities will keep you occupied during your New Forest holiday at Midgham. They range from rope swings, sand pits, fly fishing (between 15 April and 30 September), coarse fishing (15 June to 15 March), archery, axe throwing, swimming or paddling in the nearby legendary Hampshire Avon. The farm welcomes new arrivals every spring so children can help out with the newborns and really get a feel for life on the farm - bottle feeding the lambs always goes down a treat!

At the end of the day, gather around one of the four campfire areas, roast marshmallows and share your farm adventures before retiring exhausted but happy to your comfy bed.

Electric car charging is available at Midgham Farm.

Really enjoyed our stay. Sammy was excellent showing us around and the children the animals. Only challenges we had were down to us rather than the holiday! Still working up to being off grid but the proper toilet and hot water really helped!

Our holiday was as everything we needed. It was a fantastic break together away from tech, work and current stresses of life. Sammy was an amazing host, incredibly accommodating, friendly, helpful and caring. Everyone we met was kind and helpful. My daughter now wants to grow up and work on a farm and we are actively planning our return.

A pure digital detox; stepping back in time; boiling a kettle on a woodburning stove for ages! A simple way of life for us all: a family of four made up of two parents and a 3 and 1 year old who absolutely loved it. Bluebells flowering, wheelbarrowing up and down the hill with firewood and a fantastic pizza oven that the kids adored. Can’t speak highly enough of Sammy and the whole experience. We visited as a couple and now as a family and we will be returning.

Kids absolutely loved it: feeding / petting the animals, running about the woods, meeting new friends, tyre swings and diggers.Parents also enjoyed a lot though we took the strain on a few points: showers far away, usually muddy (dirty towels after day 1), often out of toilet paper. Lack of light inside cabin, even during day, wore us down eventually and not many candles. Small easy things would help out parents: a washing brush (we only had a j-cloth to clean pots and pans), dry rack, more than one loo roll, extra candles, a slightly more stable step out of cabin (Ash). These are all small points but would improve experience.

Great fun! (3 families incl children and grandchildren. Total 11 people. 3 Safari tents close by). Some Webber BBQ’s need replacing (2/3) . Ice boxes barely adequate - need better system for freezing/allocating frozen water bottles - probably twice as many needed so that half are properly frozen at start of stay at Midgham. Wood supply excellent. Children’s tractors/diggers etc fantastic - very popular! Local site rules in advance would have been appreciated eg dogs.

Wat hebben we genoten van de prachtige boerderij van Sammy! De kinderen vonden alle dieren even leuk (ok de kalfjes en de paarden nog wat leuker dan de rest). Sammy is erg gastvrij. Prachtige omgeving midden in het bos, met de reeën die langs lopen in de ochtend.

A perfect family escape. Everyone slowed down, enjoyed the simple things and reconnected. The kids adored the pigs, goats, lambs and horses and woke up every morning wanting to go and feed them. We’ve stayed at a couple of feather down farms before but this one felt extra special with secret rope swings and climbing nets hidden around the farm to be discovered.

Highlight

Pizza night

The farmer will usually fire up the pizza oven during your stay. Everyone gathers round to tell their stories of the day’s adventures and invent pizza toppings you’ll never find on the high street

Highlight

Ask the farmer

The farm tour is a must if it’s on offer during your stay, but you don’t have to wait until then. The farmer will be delighted to tell you more about farm life at any time.

The farm shop

It’s great for the basics and usually even better for local produce and low food miles. And every Feather Down farm shop operates on an honesty basis.
