As the days grow shorter and the weather turns chillier, there's plenty of reasons to still enjoy time outdoors. We want to bring the outside in, and let nature be at the centre of a family craft activity that everyone can get involved in.

Nature weaving loom

This is a great option to do in two-parts or as a longer activity, starting with a wildlife walk to gather what you need. Great for keeping kids engaged with things to find, and then spending quality time together creating a pretty craft you could display at home.

Things you'll need:

  • Three twigs/sticks (from the ground only), ideally a similar length/size
  • String or twine
  • Nature items, such as leaves or acorns

What to do:

First, go on a walk in your local area to gather up some of the things you'll need for your nature loom - look in wooded areas for fallen leaves, twigs and acorns. Remember not to break anything off a living plant! Once you're home, get ready to make your nature weaving loom.

  1. Position the twigs together in a star shape, crossing over in the middle.
  2. Using the string, secure the three twigs together with a knot in the centre.
  3. Start to weave your web with the same length of string. Wrap between the twigs, looping around each twig to secure, keeping the tension tight. Repeat all the way around the star shape in a spiral pattern.
  4. Finish with a double knot in the string - you could add a loop in here if wanting to hang up.
  5. Add nature items such as leaves and acorns into the web.

Top Tips:

  • Great to make in any season, you could add flowers in spring or different grasses in the summer.
  • Ensure the centre is secure first, so the twigs don't move around as you weave.
  • Make sure you pull the string tight as you spiral around the star shape.
  • Why not hang up as an autumn garland or decoration, perfect for front doors.
